NGO Focus – Amar Seva Sangam
In its 33rd year, Amar Seva Sangam serves not just physically challenged persons, but society at large. In conceptualising, executing and guiding the growth of Amar Seva Sangam, S Ramakrishnan a complete tetraplegic for 40 years now, has been the pivot. It is by the sheer dint of the quality and integrity of work that Ramakrishnan has managed to transition Amar Seva Sangam from its humble origin to the multi-faceted dimension that it sports now.
A spinal care centre, a home for physically challenged persons, a caring facility for children with special needs, general and special schools, vocational training centres focusing on imparting a variety of skills from the ancient to the contemporary, a prosthetic workshop, a nodal centre for government programs for the physically challenged, many-a-village adoption program and an open university study program are integral to the stellar work at Amar Seva Sangam.
The institution has grown beyond the mandate of serving as a place that would offer comfort and dignity to physically challenged persons. The magnitude of the work over the years is also helping alter perception of physically challenged persons in society.
Ramakrishnan has been instrumental in driving this transformative body of work with a meticulous eye for detail, a deep respect for every form and degree of support, and by providing a complete meaning to what is hospitality.
This long and ongoing journey of Ramakrishnan has been accompanied by many-a-physical constraint following an accident during naval officer selection in 1975 that left him paralyzed neck downwards due to a high-level spinal cord injury. Amar Seva Sangam is named after Dr Amarjit Singh Chahal who facilitated the rehabilitation of Ramakrishnan.
For more than a decade, Amar Seva Sangam also holds an annual meeting of spinal cord injured persons from the vicinity. In 2013, more than 50 SCI persons with family attended the three-day get together
